Yunnan Travel Guide: Experiencing Yulong Snow Mountain & Beyond
Yunnan is China's most diverse province. Bordering Tibet, Vietnam, and Myanmar, it offers everything from ancient cobblestone towns to towering 4,600-meter glaciers. Here is exactly how to sequence your trip and get those impossible mountain tickets.
β‘ The Classic Yunnan Itinerary
- Kunming (1 Day): Stone Forest & Transit Hub
- Dali (2 Days): Erhai Lake Cycling & Old Town
- Lijiang (3 Days): Yulong Snow Mountain & Ancient Town
- Shangri-La (2 Days): Songzanlin Monastery & Tibetan Culture
1. Conquering Yulong Snow Mountain (Jade Dragon)
Yulong Snow Mountain (also known as Jade Dragon Snow Mountain) is the crown jewel of Lijiang. The main attraction is taking the massive cable car up to Glacier Park at 4,506m, then climbing the wooden stairs to the peak viewing deck at 4,680m (15,350 ft).
π¨ The Ticket Nightmare
You cannot just show up and buy a cable car ticket. They are strictly regulated and sell out in literally seconds.
- The DIY Way: Log into the official WeChat Mini Program at exactly 8:00 PM the night before your visit to snatch a ticket. You must have a verified WeChat account and fast fingers.
- The Smart Way: Ask your hotel in Lijiang to book a 1-day group tour for you 2-3 days in advance. They use travel agency quotas to guarantee your cable car ticket, oxygen can, and transport.
Blue Moon Valley: Located at the base of the mountain, this valley has shockingly turquoise water fed by melting glaciers. Your mountain entry ticket includes the bus down to this valley. Do not skip it!
2. Lijiang Ancient Town (Day vs Night)
Lijiang Ancient Town (Dayan) is a UNESCO World Heritage site consisting of beautiful wooden Naxi architecture and winding water canals.
During the day, it's a peaceful maze of tea shops and flower-lined alleys. At night, the main squares transform into a bustling (and loud) nightlife hub with folk singers in bars and massive crowds.
Tip: Stay in a boutique guesthouse just OUTSIDE the main square or in the quieter Shuhe Ancient Town (15 minutes away by taxi) if you prefer to sleep without hearing karaoke until 2 AM.
3. Dali & Exploring Erhai Lake
A quick 2-hour high-speed train south of Lijiang brings you to Dali. Dali sits between the towering Cangshan Mountains and the massive Erhai Lake.
The absolute best thing to do in Dali is rent an e-bike (electric scooter) or hire a driver to circle Erhai Lake. Stop at Xizhou Ancient Town for traditional Bai architecture and taste "Xizhou Baba" (a savory local pastry).
4. Altitude Sickness & Preparation
If you are traveling to Yulong Snow Mountain or pushing further north to Shangri-La, you must respect the altitude.
- Take it Slow: Spend 2 days in Lijiang (2,400m) to acclimatize before attempting the 4,680m glacier park.
- Oxygen Cans: Buy a red can of oxygen at a pharmacy in Lijiang town for about Β₯20-30. If you buy it on the mountain, it costs Β₯60+.
- Keep Warm: Even in summer, the top of Yulong Snow Mountain is freezing. You can rent heavy red winter coats at the base of the cable car if you didn't pack your own.
